The name “Mt. Everest” says it all. Rising to an amazing elevation of 8,848 meters (29,029 ft.), it is the highest point on the face of the earth. The world’s tallest mountain stands in total grandeur above the highest mountain range in the world. Snowcapped peaks jut upwards into the deep blue Himalayan skies, making for the most picture-perfect alpine setting anywhere.

The Everest region (known locally as the Khumbu) is the land of the hardy Sherpa people. This indigenous tribal group have made a home on the roof of the world, developing farms as well as practicing the unique form of Mahayana Buddhism. Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN KATHMANDU (elev. 1350 m/4,429 ft.)

The adventure of a lifetime begins as your plane touches down at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. This is the gateway to the Everest/Khumbu region. It is here that you are met by your representative of Asia Buddhist Tours & Treks and taken by private car to your hotel to relax from your long journey. In the evening, meet your guide and have a short orientation.

DAY 2 – FLY TO LUKLA, TREK TO PHAKDING (elev. 2610 m/8,563 ft.)

It’s back to the airport after breakfast, but this time you are flying the magnificent 40 minute flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu region (elev. 2,840 m/9,318 ft.). The flight is short, but we fly right next to several of the amazing Himalayan ranges with their snowcapped peaks. Upon arrival at Lukla, we gather our backpacks and take a 3 – 4 hour journey to the village of Phakding. We’ll drop in elevation today as we make our way to Phakding, going through dense Himalayan forests and along fast flowing, cold rivers.

DAY 3 – TREK TO NAMCHE BAZAAR (elev. 3440 m/11,286 ft.)

Namche Bazaar is the traditional capital of the Sherpa people and the heart of the commerce for the Khumbu region. We start from Phakding early, crossing the Dudh Khosi River and then upwards to reach Namche Bazaar. We will have many opportunities to see the beautiful peaks of the region as we approach the city where we will spend the nights.

DAY 4 – TREK TO TENGBOCHE (elev. 3400 m/11,155 ft.)

If Namche Bazaar is the  commercial capital of the Khumbu, then Tengboche is the spiritual center with its famous monastery. Tengboche is home to the highest Buddhist monastery in the world. It was here St. Milarepa meditated and his footprint is preserved in the rock. We spend one night here in this holy place.

DAY 5 – REK TO DINGBOCHE (elev. 4400 m/14,436 ft.)

We’re rising in elevation today as we enjoy close-up views of so many of the amazing snowcapped peaks of the Khumbu region. We drop down to cross the Imja Khola River and then upwards to the picture-postcard village of DIngboche. It is here we will spend two nights to allow our bodies time to acclimatize to the high elevations.

DAY 6 – ACCLIMATIZATION DAY

The air is much thinner up here which requires our bodies a day to adjust to the lower oxygen levels. AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is a real medical condition, and the best way to avoid it is to simply give the body time to adjust.  We will do some short hikes around the village, enjoying the incredible mountain scenery.

DAY 7 – TREK TO LOBUCHE (elev. 4900 m/16.076 ft.)

We are above the tree line as we make our way upwards to the village of Lobuche. The trees have been replaced by low lying junipers, which allows us incredible views of the mountains in every direction. We reach a small mountain lodge at the village of Lobuche. Tomorrow we reach our destination: Everest Base Camp!

DAY 8 – TREK TO GORAK SHEP (elev. 5160 m/16,929 ft.), visit EBC

Today we will finally arrive at Everest Base Camp (elev. 5365 m/17,601 ft.) where Sir Edmund Hillary and Norgay Sherpa began this historic ascent to the top of Mt. Everest. We won’t be climbing Mt. Everest, but we will make our way to Everest Base Camp where we will see climbers from around the world either beginning their ascent or celebrating a successful climb. We trek to Gorak Shep where we leave our backpacks, then hike to Everest Base Camp and back.

DAY 9 – HIKE MT. KALAPATTHAR, TREK TO PHERICHE (elev. 4200 m/13,780 ft.)

We rise early to enjoy a climb to the top of Mt. Kalapatthar (elev. 5545 m/18,192 ft.) to see the most spectacular view of Mt. Everest. From Everest Base Camp, there is a mountain that blocks our view of the world’s highest peak. From the summit, we can see it in all of its alpine glory. It takes about two hours to climb Mt. Kalapatthar. We return to Gorak Shep to pick up our backpacks, and then make a short journey to Pheriche to spend the night.

DAY 10 – TREK TO KYANGJUMA (elev. 3570 m/11,713 ft.)

It’s a short, but beautiful day of trekking. Along this trail, we see Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Thamserku, Mt. Lhotse as well as more views of Mt. Everest. We cross the Imja Khola River, visit the monastery once more at Tengboche and finally reach our destination of Kyangjuma.

DAY 11 – TREK TO MONJO (elev. 2840 m/9,318 ft.)

This is a very different path as we are taking a wonderfully scenic route usually not done by other trekking companies in Nepal. The trek to Monjo is rich in wildlife and not as many trekkers, so we enjoy the unique flora and fauna of the Khumbu region. This is the land of the blue sheep and snow leopards. Monjo is a quiet, picturesque Sherpa village where we can enjoy the local hospitality and spend the night.

DAY 12 – TREL TO LUKLA (elev. 2,840 m/9,318 ft.)

It’s our final day of trekking as we make our way back to Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu region. We will spend the night here, enjoying the fellowship with other trekkers who are now returning back to Kathmandu.

DAY 13 – FLY TO KATHMANDU

The trek has come to a close as we board our plane for the 40 minute flight back to Kathmandu over the backbone of the Himalayas. It’s a morning flight, so there’s plenty of time to go and explore this fabled city. Take time to explore some of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites that the Kathmandu Valley is world famous for. Relax on your hotel’s roof garden, or explore the ancient, narrow streets of the city. There is so much to see and do in the Kathmandu Valley. You can even have your friends at Asia Buddhist Tours & Treks provide an experience, knowledgeable city guide to show you around.

In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner in Kathmandu.
