The Kathmandu Valley is a wonderful place to visit. Its name alone is one of mystery and intrigue. It is a place steeped with temples and culture along with incredible mountain views. The Valley is ringed with low hills that rise up to nearly 3000 meters. The Valley is divided by the Holy Bagmati River which drains the fertile valley. It is said that it was once a vast lake when one of the gods took his sword and cut a narrow gorge to drain out the lake.
Legend has it that the Kathmandu Valley has 1000 temples, and it is truly a good possibility. The valley does contain seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ancient temples and cities of Buddhist and Hindu origins.
There is also an incredible sunrise over the High Himalayas from Nagarkot, which is on the rim overlooking the Valley. Here on a clear day you can see snowcapped mountains all the way from Mt. Everest in the east to the Annapurna Range in the west. From this spot you can see several of the highest peaks in the world.
