Kathmandu Valley Sunrise Tour

4 Nights/5 Days to Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Changu Narayan

Anyone who ever said history is boring has obviously never been to the Kathmandu Valley. Here history truly comes alive as the vibrant culture and past mix with today. The Kathmandu Valley Sunrise Tour combines a spectacular Himalayan sunrise along with the marvelous culture and history of the Kathmandu Valley.

The Kathmandu Valley Sunrise Tour combines a short trek with a fantastic sunrise on top of Nagarkot Hill. The trek and tour explores several UNESCO World Heritage sites with its amazing architecture, palaces and temples. Two of the places include entire cities that have been declared such sites where you can watch artisans doing their ancient crafts as they have done for centuries.

It is said that the Kathmandu Valley has 1000 temples, and if you got time, you are more than welcome to come and count them. Each temple is uniquely different, reflecting different Hindu and Buddhist deities

Asia Buddhist Treks & Tours is happy to offer this amazing five day adventure onto the rim of the Kathmandu Valley. These low, green hills rise to nearly 3000 meters in elevation, affording magnificent views of the snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas as well as the large green Kathmandu Valley below.

It may be an old cliché that “history comes alive”, but here in Nepal, history and culture mix with the reality of today to bring to life a world unto itself. Come and take the Kathmandu Valley Sunrise Tour with Asia Buddhist Tours & Treks.

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1 – ARRIVAL IN KATHMANDU (elev. 1350 m/4,429 ft.)

You step off the plane as you breath in that wonderful alpine air. Pick up your visa, go through passport control and once you’ve gathered your luggage, you’re out the door. It’s into the capable hands of your friends at Asia Buddhist Tours & Treks who will take you by private car to your hotel to rest from your long journey. There enjoy a welcome drink with your friends from Asia Buddhist Tours & Treks as they give you a short briefing about the days ahead. Tonight, enjoy a dinner and a wonderful night’s sleep.

DAY 2 – SIGHTSEEING IN THE KATHMANDU VALLEY

The Kathmandu Valley is a large valley ringed with high green hills. Centuries ago, this Valley was covered by an enormous lake. An earthquake broke open a gorge, draining the lake and now several wonderful rivers water the farms that abound. Today we are going to visit several of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites which include the famed Swayambhu or Monkey Temple. This is one of three prominent Buddhist pilgrimage sites, and this one dates back over 2000 years. We also visit another UNESCO Buddhist Heritage Site: Boudhinath which is the largest stupa in Asia. Here we find the largest Tibetan Refugee community with its monasteries and culture to enjoy. Nearby is another UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pashupatinath, the holiest Hindu area with nearly 500 temples. We visit each place with our own private vehicle. In the evening, enjoy a good dinner and rest at your hotel.

DAY 3 – CHANGU NARAYAN, TREK TO NAGARKOT (elev. 2175 m/7,135 ft.)

The trek begins today, but before we start, we journey by private car to the picturesque little Newari village of Changu Narayan. The entire village has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it will feel like you’ve stepped back in time as you walk its stepped, flagstone streets. The village sits on a hill overlooking the Kathmandu Valley and contains the oldest Hindu Temple. This temple dates back nearly 800 years to the time of the ancient Lichhavi kings.

We start trekking after we explore Changu Narayan and walk for about three hours to reach the high point of Nagarkot. Located on the northeastern corner of the Kathmandu Valley, its setting features amazing views of the mountains. On clear days, you can see all the way from Mt. Everest in the east to Mt. Dhaulagiri (7th highest peak in the world) in the west. You can see five mountains of the 14 8000+ meter peaks from Nagarkot.

Watch a sunset, and then enjoy dinner and time for bed.

DAY 4 – SUNRISE FROM NAGARKOT, TOUR BHAKTAPUR AND PATAN

We rise before dawn to see a magnificent sunrise over the Himalayas. We stand in the darkness until suddenly a red ray of the morning sun shoots above the snowcapped peaks. The summits turn from grey to a beautiful red tint as the snow reflects the morning light of the effulgent sun. As the sun rises above the mountains, the red turns to a brilliant white as we watch the Himalayan vista in all of its glory.

We have breakfast and then depart by private vehicle to Bhaktapur and Patan. Both were once were their own kingdoms before the unification of Nepal in 1769.  Bhaktapur features a very unique royal palace of 55 intricately carved windows and the tallest Hindu temple in Nepal. The stone carvings are phenomenal. We move on to Patan to see its old royal palace as well as uniquely shaped temples. Patan is known as the City of Arts because of the amazing artistic abilities of its craftsmen. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner in Kathmandu.

DAY 5 – DEPARTURE
