Ladakh is a land deeply steeped into Buddhism. It is home to several ancient and medieval monasteries that house valuable and sacred arts and artifacts on Buddhism. Buddhist Monasteries tour in Ladakh allows you to explore some of the important monasteries here, directly interact with monks and participate in some major Buddhist festivals.
The tour starts off by visiting the 17th century Hemis Monastery, which was built in tribute to Guru Padmasambhava of Gelugpa sect. Be part of annual Tsechu festival which draws a large crowd from all over Ladakh. Next is the 15th century Thiksey Monastery that features impressive statues of Maitreya Buddha, Avalokiteshwara and Padmasambhava.
Founded in the 11th century, Likir Monastery is another major attraction. There are two Dukhangs or assembly halls that showcase statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, Maitreya, Amitabha Buddha along with Avalokiteshvara. The annual festival of Domochey hosted by the monastery is worth attending. You will then visit 10th century Lamayuru monastery in Lamayuru, a day’s journey from Likir.
The tour wraps up with a visit to Alchi and Basgo monasteries. Alchi is one of the most famous monasteries in Ladakh built by Tibetan translator Rinchen Zangpo. There are 5 temples inside including Dukhang and Lotsawa Lakhang. Built by King RInchen Namgyal, Basgo Monastery houses a gilded copper statue of Maitreya Buddha.

On your arrival, our local office representative will welcome you in Leh, then transfer to your booked hotel. Overnight in a hotel.
This is a day you will spend touring the sites around Leh. Start off by visiting Hemis and Thiksey monasteries. Hemis is probably the most famous Buddhist monastery in Leh. This 17th century monastery dedicated to Guru Padmasambhava practices the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Every year it hosts Tsechu festival when people from Ladakh congregate here to offer prayers. The statues of Paldan Lhamo and of Guru Padmasambhava adorn the inner interior of this monastery.
The 15th century Thiksey Monastery was built by Paldan Zangpo, and belongs to the Gelugpa sect. It is spread in an area of 1000 acres. The monastery hosts a 14m statue of Maitreya Buddha, Tara Temple, Lamo-khang and statues of Avalokiteshvara and Padmasambhava. The festival of Gustor occurs here in October or November.
Early morning drive to Likir takes 2 hrs. Likir is the starting point for your trekking. But first visit Likir monastery. Founded in the 11th century it first belonged to Kadampa order then to Gelugpa sect. There are two Dukhangs or assembly halls showcasing statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, Maitreya, Amitabha Buddha along with Avalokiteshvara. Likir monastery hosts the festival of Domochey every year. The trek afterwards passes through green fields and Sumdo village before heading towards Yangthang. Camp overnight.
Today you will start early. The first part of the journey is through Wulle valley before descending to Hemis Shukpachan. Visit local monastery and partake of local cuisines. Overnight in camp.
The first part of the day will involve trekking to Timsogam. You will pass through traditional settlement and small barley fields. From Timsogam you will take a drive to Lamayuru. Originally the monastery of Bon religion, the 10th century Lamayuru monastery features statues, thangkas and frescoes. Interact with monks or just watch them pray and meditate within the monastery. Overnight camping.
