Upon your arrival in Bhutan at Paro International Airport, we will come to receive you and help you transfer luggage. You will board into a luxury bus and take the easy 90 minute journey to the capital city of Thimphu.
We check into our hotel, and then we do some sightseeing in the city. Included on today’s tour are:

Memorial Chorten: This huge Buddhist stupa was constructed in memory of the third king of Bhutan who reigned from 1952 until 1972. He is greatly honored by the people, an example of justice, demonstrating the beauty of Buddhist living.

Tashichho Dzong: The seat of the government since 1952 which houses the throne room and offices of the king. Other important offices are located here. In the evening, we return to our hotel for dinner.

Today’s journey is definitely the highlight of the trip. From here we travel the high pass to Dochula Pass (elev. 3100 m/10,171 ft.) You will stand on top of the pass in total awe of the amazing beauty of the eastern Himalayas. They may not be as tall as the mountains of Nepal, but in no way is their awesome majesty diminished. From here, we gaze at the tallest mountain of the eastern Himalayas. Mt. Gangar Punsum, rising to 7,520 meters (24,672 ft.) with its snow capped peak jutting high into the deep blue skies of the Himalayas.

We depart from the pass, but soon enjoy a hike to Khamsum Yuley Namgyal Chhorten. This amazing place features a beautiful temple with a scenic backdrop. We walk uphill for 45 minutes, experiencing the rice paddies and farms along the way. We tour the temple and then it’s just an easy 30 minute walk back to our bus.

Punakha Dzong is a special place. Situated at the confluence of the Pho-Chu (Male) and Mochu (Female) rivers, the two rivers become one in this scenic valley. Punakha Dzong is an ancient fortress on an island and it is here that the monks travel for the winter months from Thimphu. This Dzong also once served as the ancient capital of Bhutan.
We return to Thimphu to enjoy dinner; retire to bed for a good night’s sleep.

After breakfast travel to Punakha before traveling by our luxury bus to Paro by way of the capital. We see along the way:

Chimi Lhakhang (Divine Madman’s Monastery): This monastery is a special place where couples who cannot conceive come and pray before the giant phallus. The monastery is dedicated to one Buddhist monk who pursued reform of Buddhism in this region centuries ago. He was called “the divine madman” because of his teachings, but the people loved him and learned from him a better path on the road to enlightenment.

Kuensel Phodrang: The largest statue of Lord Buddha is located here. Sitting on a hill overlooking the beautiful Thimphu Valley, it is a place to feel the spirit of the Valley and the Eastern Himalayas. There is a nature park here to enjoy as you gaze upon the beauty below.

Royal Botanical Gardens: A lovely spot which features the unique flora of Bhutan.
We will drive then to Paro for the night. Arrive, enjoy dinner and then it’s time for pooja and bed.

Paro is an amazing city. Its crowning jewel is the famed Taktsang Monastery. Known as the Tiger’s Nest, it is said that Guru Padmasambhava in the 7th century flew to this very spot on the back of a flying tigress to meditate in the cave here for three months. He was fighting with the demons who fought his teaching on Buddhism and it was here that he overcame their evil plans to stop the spread of Buddhism to Bhutan. Today a beautiful monastery literally hangs off the side of the cliff. We will explore it along with other Buddhist sites that dot the Paro Valley.

In the evening, you will delight at farewell dinner. Enjoy the dinner and prepare for the next day’s travel.

Today we find ourselves having to head to the airport for departure from this spiritual land of the Himalayas. No doubt we are feeling like we would rather stay and continue with our spiritual journey. Depending on the timing of your international flight, our staff will drop you at the Paro International Airport.
