Overview - Lower Dolpo Trek

Lower Dolpo trekking or Phoksundo Lake trek is an adventurous journey into the pristine Phoksundo Lake at

3600m. Located near Tibet, Dolpo is a cultural and natural gem hidden under the shadow of Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m), the sixth highest mountain in the world.

Lower Dolpo trekking literally is a challenging route, wild and remote, only accessible by airplane and on foot. At the heart of this region is Shey Phoksundo National Park, the largest national park in Nepal pristine which is home to many endangered species including snow leopard, blue sheep, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan tahr and Musk deer.

The trail passes through dense forests of pine, rhododendrons, bamboo, and juniper, into Dho Tarap valley and comes out crossing two high Himalayan passes: Baga La pass (5175m) and Numa La pass (5290m). These passes are a vantage point not only to observe spectacular panorama of Dhaulagiri, Kanjirowa, Churen Himal, Nilgiri, Putha and even Kugung La and Khyung La peaks in Tibet.

The chances to explore Bon po and Buddhist gompas and learn about Tibetan culture and lifestyle are high on this trek. Not to forget that this is a land once touched by Padmasambhava who is said to have brought Buddhism to Tibet.

Lower Dolpo trekking is graded moderate to difficult so trekkers are required to be physically and mentally fit to enter this trek. Since this region lies in rain-shadow territory, the trek is possible in Spring, Autumn as well as Summer seasons.

Most arrangements are made on a Bed & Breakfast basis in deluxe – star hotels in cities. Depending upon your interests, a wide range of hotels are available in city areas such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, etc. During the trekking trail, you will enjoy an outdoor trekking adventure usually in a natural setting with overnight accommodation arranged in tents and camping. The ‘Camping Trek’ requires the participants to carry tents/camps, enough food stock, kitchen equipment and other logistics.

City accommodation will be arranged in Double/ Twin Sharing basis in Deluxe hotel on bed & breakfast plan. Camping will include camping tent, dining tent, kitchen tent, toilet tent, sleeping bags, mattress etc. Please let us know beforehand if you exchange double/twin sharing beds for single beds. The availability of beds also depends on seasonality with limited choices available in peak season.
