Rara Lake trekking is located in western region of Nepal, far away from the crowded and popular trekking trails of Annapurna, Everest and Langtang. This is an off-the-beaten-path trail which is least explored by trekkers and is comparatively more pristine and wild.

The focal point of Rara Lake trekking is Rara Lake which at an altitude of 2990m is Nepal’s largest lake. The lake is 167m deep, 13km in length and falls within the territory of Rara National Park. The park is covered with subtropical vegetation including pine, juniper, firs, birches, spruce, rhododendron, and oak trees which form a lush habitat for Himalayan bears, Musk deer, rhesus monkey, red pandas, Ghorals, Otter. The lake in particular remains a breeding ground for many resident and migratory birds coming from as far as Siberia and Mongolia, viz., Yellow-throated martin, black-necked grebe, Himalayan monal etc.

The trek route passes through a landscape, very remote and isolated. Since tourism has just been introduced here, there are very few lodges and hotels in the area. This is also a restricted area so trekkers mandatorily have to obtain permits to enter the park area. You will follow the Sinja Valley civilization and Jumla and make your way towards Rara Lake. The highest point of this trek is Chuchemara Danda (4260m) which affords splendid views of Api Himal (7132m), Patasi Himal (6860m) and Jagdula Himal (5785m).

This is also an opportunity to observe and learn about Nepali village life and culture of Nepali people who are distinctly different from those living in the central and eastern region. Jumla is specially rich for Deuja dance and Dohori songs and is the origin destination of Nepali khas language. There are still remnants of medieval palaces of Khas and Malla kings.

Trekking is graded easy to moderate and is best during Spring and Autumn.

Before you go

Trekking Group

For the classic Rara Lake Trek, there will be a license holder trekking guide and Porters for carrying luggage (2 trekkers = 1 porter). This arrangement ensures that if anyone in the group is sick the trip can still go on as planned. However, Asia Buddhist Tours & Treks can run this trek for groups of any size. Usually, we have found that the maximum number of trekkers in any group is 12 people.

All accommodations for the Rara Lake Trek are on a twin-sharing basis. The lodges and tea houses have been selected by Asia Buddhist Tours & Treks after personal inspection. We look at the conditions of the inns, local hygiene, quality of food, type of service and more.

We offer two types of accommodations on this trek. In Kathmandu you will stay three nights at a Deluxe Hotel and one night in Nepalgunj. You will spend nine nights in standard tea houses during the trek. These places have pleasant, unheated rooms and wooden beds with foam mattresses.

All rooms are double occupancy, but you can request a single occupancy room for an additional fee, which will be available only during the trekking. However, sometimes single rooms are not available in some places, depending upon local conditions. We do work to provide the best possible options when trekking in the High Himalayas.

Food will vary between typical Nepali in the mountains. In Kathmandu and Nepalgunj, there are far more choices, which include Indian, Continental, Italian, Tibetan and more. The city areas offer everything from good steaks and burgers to apple pie and pizza.
Nepali food is nutritious, and ranges from our traditional Daal/Bhat and Momo to fantastic breads, fruits and more. The cooking is wholesome and the food is tasty during the trek trail too.
