Overview - Rara Lake Basic Homestay Trek

Located in the remote western region of Nepal, Rara Lake is the biggest lake in Nepal and the most beautiful and pristine. Rara Lake Basic Homestay trek offers an exploration of Rara Lake as well as opportunity to get homestay experience with local families.

Rara Lake sits at an altitude of 2990m in Jumla district. The serenity and aloofness of this lake is what attracts very few trekkers and tourists every year. The lake is home to many resident and migratory birds including Yellow-throated martin, black-necked grebe, Himalayan monal etc. Boating, walking, bird watching, horse riding are some of the major activities around the lake. Enjoy spectacular views of Api Himal (7132m), Patasi Himal (6860m) and Jagdula Himal (5785m) from here.

Jumla is especially known for Deuja dance and Dohori songs and is the cradle of Nepali khas language. The khas people here follow a very traditional way of life, mostly engaged in agriculture and cattle farming. During your trek you will have the chance to stay in homestay facilities and experience what it is to live like local people.

To visit Rara Lake, you will have to trek through Rara National Park, Nepal’s smallest national park. The park is covered with a variety of vegetation from pine, juniper, firs, birches to spruce, rhododendron, and oak trees. The forest is a prime habitat for Musk deer, red pandas, ghorals, rhesus monkeys, Himalayan bears, otter etc. On your return, you will enjoy a thrilling mountain flight to Kathmandu.

For this trek we provide one licensed professional guide who can communicate or speak in English, one porter for every two participants and one assistant guide for more than 12 pax. A group of 16 participants will have one complimentary group leader. Our trekking guides and porters are well informed about their responsibilities. And the porters can carry up to 20kg of weight. Our field staff will also include one guide who is adept in administering first aid.

Accommodations

The accommodations are chosen based on trekking itinerary, comfort level, budget and interests of trekkers and accessibility in terms of scenery and trail. Most arrangements are made on a Bed & Breakfast basis in deluxe – star hotels in cities. Depending upon your interests, a wide range of hotels are available in city areas such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, etc. During the trekking trail, you will enjoy simple homestays operated by local family or community which offers you a rare and unique experience of staying with local family as one of the members. These kinds of accommodations are available in remote trekking trails where locals turn their house into a homestay with simple decoration and then offer lodging to trekkers. Through homestay facilities, locals are able to earn some decent money directly thus helping the local economy.

For this trek we offer two types of accommodation, ‘Deluxe hotel’ in the city and ‘Basic Homestays’’ during the trekking trail. City accommodation will be arranged in Double/ Twin Sharing basis in Deluxe hotel on bed & breakfast plan and the ‘Homestay’ features village houses with simple bedding in a very rural traditional set up which are often chosen based on bed availability and trekking itinerary. The ‘Hotels and Homestays’ have been selected by the Asia Buddhist Tours & Treks after personal inspection. We look at the conditions of the inns, local hygiene, quality of food, type of service and more. All rooms in the city are double occupancy, but you can request a single occupancy room for an additional fee. However, sometimes single rooms are not available in some places, depending upon seasonality with limited choices available in peak season. Please let us know beforehand if you exchange double/twin sharing beds for single beds we do work to provide the best possible options when trekking in the High Himalayas.

Meals

Touristic cities such as Kathmandu, Pokhara, offer some of the finest dining restaurants. Get spoiled with unlimited choices for cuisines, ranging from local Nepali food to international delicacies. In contrast, there might not be as much variety of cuisines available on the trekking trail. Here the ‘Homestays’ and small eateries along the trail will offer you basic meals such as Nepali Dal Bhat, Dhido, Champa etc along with tea and coffee.

For this trek we offer you full board (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) basic local meal and 3 cups of tea/coffee per day. Please note that full board meals are not included during your transition stay in city areas, guests will have to pay for the meals (dinner and lunch), alcohol, hot & cold beverages and mineral water.
